Nationwide Case Study Competition

Write up a SOAP for a case of your choosing and use the invoice to go through the Nationwide Pet Insurance claims process. The best submission is awarded a $1,00 Visa gift card and a Nationwide gift bundle. Look out for an email from the VBMA officers with more information on how to apply.

SPRING/SUMMER

 

Banfield Student Job Program (Deadline January 31)

During the course of a Banfield Externship, students will develop medical skills, increase their medical knowledge base, learn about the business of veterinary medicine, and see firsthand Banfield’s quality and client-focused pet care.  

 

Student gains an in-depth understanding of how an animal hospital corporation with an emphasis on preventive care, management, and business concepts operates. Extern positions are available nationwide and emphasize both medicine and business. Furthermore, exceptional students with specific interests (ex. government or industry relations, marketing, research, etc), can contact the Banfield externship team for the opportunity to create their unique program and extern at Banfield's corporate headquarters.

 

Nationwide Student Externship (Deadline February 15)

Veterinary Pet Insurance's annual student externship presents an exciting chance for future veterinarians to learn fundamental business concepts and specific information about pet insurance. The one-week rotation takes place at the company's southern California headquarters. This rewarding program is an ideal way to add vital business experience to your resume.

 

Selected from a national applicant pool, one lucky student gains an in-depth understanding of how VPI operates and how pet insurance products are designed. Most importantly, the chosen applicant learns how veterinary clinicians, pet owners and pets all benefit from increased pet insurance utilization.

 

One week externship in June, July, or August. VPI will provide airfare up to $600 and five nights of accommodations at a hotel close to the company's corporate headquarters in Southern California. Extern will receive an hourly rate of $15 for a five-day work week.

Gain insight and perspective on the business of veterinary medicine, including private practice, industry suppliers, and veterinary schools.

 

Veterinary Business Advisors

The objective of our externship is for students to gain knowledge and experience regarding the issues affecting veterinary medicine, including analysis of emerging business and legal issues, employer/employee contract negotiations, the buying and selling of veterinary practices, partnerships, veterinary malpractice and animal law issues.

 

During this program, our externs will work closely with Charlotte Lacroix DVM, JD, and her staff by participating in conferences with clients to learn first-hand the concerns faced by practice owners and there employees. They will analyze employment agreements and learn what makes a fair deal and assist with the drafting of new agreements, settlements and legal communications. Externs will also research and write about a topic that interests them for publication.

National VBMA Meeting

The National Meeting in Orlando, Florida is an annual gathering of national officers, regional leaders, and chapter officers from all 40 VBMA chapters. Students get together to discuss ways to improve the organization by enhancing the business certificate program curriculum, increasing membership, and sharing strengths and successes of individual chapters.

Oregon Veterinary Conference

Corvallis, OR | March 4-6, 2016

The Oregon Veterinary Conference is a cooperative effort of the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association and the College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University with the goal of providing meaningful continuing education to Northwest veterinarians, practice managers, and paraprofessionals.

 

 

Live Oak Bank (Deadline February 1 and October 1)

A small team of veterinary students will get a behind the scenes look at what it takes to become a veterinary practice owner. This program gives an in-depth overview of the keys to understanding financial reports, the lending process, practice management, and marketing strategies. The program is overseen by an on-staff DVM. 10 students will be be selected in October and 10 students will be selected in February.

 

Embrace Pet Insurance

This externship will allow the student to gain a well-rounded understanding of actuarial science and how to apply this to the veterinary industry and profession. The student will learn from past entrepreneurial experiences, the business of a startup company and the steps necessary achieve success. The student will also learn Embrace’s core values, culture, and what makes a business run day-to-day.

 

The student will learn through interactions with co-founders and upper management in one or more departments including, sales, claims, customer service, technology and marketing. They will gain an understanding from both the customer and veterinary experience.

 

The externship includes two weeks in Cleveland, Ohio at the Embrace headquarters and includes two, one-on-one interviews with top veterinarians associated with Embrace; Dr. Rex Riggs and Dr. Marty Becker.

 

Two week externships offered in June, July, or August. Travel, transportation, housing, and meal expenses covered up to $2,500.

Western Veterinary Conference

Las Vegas, NV | March 6-10, 2016

Full conference attendance for students is $35.

WVC presents scientific and practice relevant information to members of the veterinary profession and supporting paraprofessionals.
